Asian Water Development Outlook 2007
Asian Water Development Outlook 2007, from the Asian Development Bank, argues that developing Asian countries should not experience a water crisis in the future - there is now enough knowledge, technology, and expertise available in the region to solve its existing and future water problems. If some Asian countries face a crisis in the future, inadequate or inappropriate water governance, not physical scarcity of water, will be the likely reason. Published November 2007

Assessing Biofuels
Assessing Biofuels, from UNEP, recommends new planning and management approaches to balance the beneficial effects of the production of biofuels with their environmental and social consequences. Published 2010

Balancing Cost and Emissions Certainty: An Allowance Reserve for Cap-and-Trade
On efficiency grounds, the economics community has tended to emphasize price-based policies to address climate change - such as taxes or a "safety valve" price ceiling for cap-and-trade - while environmental advocates have sought a more clear, quantitative limit on emissions. This working paper presents a simple modification to the idea of a safety valve: a quantitative limit called an "allowance reserve" which may bridge the gap between these competing interests and potentially improve efficiency relative to tax or other price-based policies. Blue Carbon - The Role of Healthy Oceans in Binding Carbon
Blue Carbon, from GRID-Arendal and UNEP, highlights the critical role of the oceans and ocean ecosystems in maintaining our climate. It aims to assist policy makers to mainstream an oceans agenda into national and international climate change initiatives. Various electronic resources can be downloaded as well as the full report. Building Biodiversity Business
Building Biodiversity Business, from Shell and IUCN, argues that there is a need to develop new business models and market mechanisms for biodiversity conservation and to persuade the public and policy makers that biodiversity (or component ecosystem services) can be conserved on a commercial basis. Published March 2008

Buildings and Climate Change: Status, Challenges and Opportunities
Buildings and Climate Change: Status, Challenges and Opportunities, from UNEP, says many opportunities exist for governments, industry and consumers to take appropriate actions during the life span of buildings that will help mitigate the impacts of global warming. Published March 2007

Challenges to International Waters: Regional Assessments in a Global Perspective
Challenges to International Waters, from the Global International Waters Assessment, summarizes the major transboundary concerns and their environmental and socio-economic impacts. It identifies the root causes and draws policy relevant conclusions and outlines knowledge gaps which impede the sustainable management of international waters. The regional reports are also available for download. Published February 2006

Charting our Water Future
Charting our Water Future, from the 2030 Water Resources Group, shows that, while meeting competing future demands for water will be a considerable challenge, it is entirely possible to close the growing gap between water supply and demand. Published November 2009

Climate Change and Development Links
Climate Change and Development Links, from the International Institute for Environment and Development, describes the independent evolution of climate change and development discourses, and provides some explanation as to why the two fields have operated largely independently from one another. Climate Change and Human Health - Risks and Responses, from the World Health Organization, seeks to describe the context and process of global climate change, its actual or likely impacts on health, and how human societies and their governments should respond with particular focus on the health sector. Climate Change and Nuclear Power
Climate Change and Nuclear Power, from the International Atomic Energy Agency, concludes that the best chance for sustainable development lies in allowing all energy supply options, including nuclear power, to compete, improve and contribute on a level playing field directly on the basis of cost-effectiveness, environmental protection and safety. Climate Change Reconsidered, from the Heartland Institute, presents a detailed rebuttal of the findings of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

Climate Change Threat to Pacific Ocean Mangroves, from the United Nations Environment Programme, defines the potential impact on this valuable ecosystem, as well as current pressures, and options for sustainable management. Published July 2006

Climate Change, Coral Bleaching and the Future of the World's Coral Reefs
Climate Change, Coral Bleaching and the Future of the World's Coral Reefs, from Greenpeace, concludes that if climate change is not stopped, coral bleaching is set to steadily increase in frequency and intensity all over the world until it occurs annually by 2030 - 2070. It was prepared by Ove Hoegh-Guldberg, director of the Coral Reef Research Institute.

Climate Change: Global Risks, Challenges & Decisions - Synthesis Report, from the University of Copenhagen, summarizes the key messages of a scientific congress held in Copenhagen from 10-12th March 2009 to bring together recent understanding of the impacts of human influence on the climate and the response options and approaches that are available to tackle this issue. Climate Ready Estuaries Program Synthesis of Adaptation Options for Coastal Areas, from the United States Environmental Protection Agency, provides a brief introduction to key physical impacts of climate change on estuaries and a review of on-the-ground adaptation options available to coastal managers to reduce their systems' vulnerability to climate change impacts. Published January 2009

Climate Vulnerability and Capacity Analysis Handbook
The Climate Vulnerability and Capacity Analysis Handbook, from CARE, provides a methodology aimed at improving understanding of the implications of climate change for lives and livelihoods. By combining local knowledge with scientific climate information, the process builds people's understanding about climate risks and adaptation strategies. Published June 2009

Climate Wrongs and Human Rights
Climate Wrongs and Human Rights, from Oxfam, argues that the industrialized nations should base their climate policies on existing international human rights principles and stop using economic excuses to avoid their responsibilities.

Confronting Climate Change in the U.S. Northeast: Science, Impacts, and Solutions
Confronting Climate Change in the U.S. Northeast: Science, Impacts, and Solutions is the 2007 report from the Northeast Climate Impacts Assessment (NECIA). The NECIA is a collaborative effort between the Union of Concerned Scientists and a team of independent experts using state-of-the-art tools to assess how global warming will affect the northeastern United States.

Confronting Climate Change: Avoiding the Unmanageable and Managing the Unavoidable, from the United Nations Foundation and Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society, outlines the best measures for mitigating and adapting to global warming.

Coral Reef Resilience and Resistance to Bleaching
Coral Reef Resilience and Resistance to Bleaching, from the World Conservation Union and the Nature Conservancy, shows that the fate of corals may not yet be sealed. By fighting other stress factors such as pollution or overfishing impacting on coral reefs, reefs will be able to better adapt to climate change impacts. Published October 2006

Crisis or Opportunity: Climate Change and Thailand, from Greenpeace, gathers information from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change together with studies conducted in Thailand in order to enhance the understanding and awareness of climate change impacts among the local people. Energy Efficiency and Climate Change Considerations for On-road Transport in Asia is a contribution to the development, by the Asian Development Bank, of a policy framework to guide investments and address energy efficiency and climate change in the transport sector in Asia. Published May 2006

Energy Security and Sustainable Development in Asia and the Pacific
Energy Security and Sustainable Development in Asia and the Pacific, from ESCAP, argues that the nations of the region will need to take on a broad range of measures, including improving energy efficiency, rationalizing pricing and taxation, improving governance and diversifying supply, in particular, through alternative and renewable resources. Appropriate legal frameworks, regulatory environments and systems for pricing and taxation, along with fair and transparent processes that will encourage public-private partnerships for developing infrastructure, are also necessary. Ecological and social implications must be considered. Published April 2008

Facing an Uncertain Future, from CIFOR, presents the case for a dual agenda to enhance the role of forests in adaptation: assisting forests to weather the coming storm of climate change, and managing forests in ways that enable forest-dependent peoples and society in general to cope with the coming changes. Food Security, Farming and Climate Change to 2050, from the International Food Policy Research Institute, assesses how serious the danger to food security might be and suggests some steps policymakers can take to remedy the situation. Published December 2010

Global Hunger Index
The World Hunger Index, from the International Food Policy Research Institute, shows that worldwide progress in reducing hunger remains slow. The 2009 global Global Hunger Index has fallen by only one quarter from the 1990 value. Published October 2009

Global Outlook for Ice and Snow, from UNEP, reports on future prospects for the world's snow and ice cover. Published June 2007

The Global Survey of Early Warning Systems is an assessment of capacities, gaps and opportunities towards building a comprehensive global early warning system for all natural hazards. It was prepared at the request of the Secretary-General of the United Nations. Published September 2006

IFPRI Publications
The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), whose mandate is to seek sustainable solutions for ending hunger and poverty, regularly publishes policy briefs on agricultural issues related to climate change.
